Anne Tang graduated from University of Bradford, England. Upon graduating, she spent her pre-registration year in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She then took a year out from optometry to study for her MBA at University of Bradford. She went back to work full time as an optometrist in West Yorkshire, England. She then studied part time for her Master in Optometry with the sponsorship from the employer. She continued working in England until her return to Malaysia in 1995.

In 1996, she joined the local eye hospital as the Head of Optometry Unit until this year. While at the eye hospital, she conducted 3 contact Lens courses (MCLEP) for the opticians. She is a IACLE contact lens educator. She had given lectures to the Ophthalmic Assistant course.

She is a member of British College of Optometrist, Association of Malaysian Optometrist and IACLE.

She is a keen badminton player and swims regularly. She is married with two girls.

Dr. Meena S. Kandiah

Short Introduction

Dr Meena Kandiah graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin, Ireland in June 1993. She then passed the Part 1 of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh examination in 1997. In December 1998, she successfully completed her Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (UK). In June 2000 she was gazetted as a Clinical Specialist in Ophthalmology by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia.

Following her gazettment she served as a clinical specialist in Hospital Melaka for 6 years before moving to private practice in Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka. During her period of service with the Ministry of Health, Dr. Meena also served as a part time lecturer and examiner to the Melaka Manipal Medical College. She was actively involved in setting out the syllabus for postgraduate FRCS and the Masters program in her department and was in charge of all teaching as well as the supervision of surgeries performed by specialists in training. Dr. Meena also organized and conducted a number of ophthalmology courses for both local general practitioners and ophthalmologists in training.

She co-authored a study on �Cost Efficiency of Cataract Surgery� which was published in 2004 in �International Ophthalmology�

Outside of work she enjoys the outdoors, music and arts.

Currently, Dr Meena is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and ophthalmologist at the Alpha Specialist Centre in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya. She is also a visiting consultant to the International Specialist Eye Centre at MidValley City.

Dr. Kamala Devi Lingam

Short Introduction

Dr Kamala Devi Lingam is a senior consultant ophthalmologist with subspecialty interest in orbital, ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery (oculoplastics).

She graduated from Kasturba Medical College, Mysore University in 1980. She obtained the Masters Degree in Ophthalmology from UKM in 1989. Thereafter she did a fellowship in Oculoplastics in the Queens Hospital Nottingham (UK) in 1997.

She served the government from 1979 till 2001. During these years in the government service she was the head of the ophthalmology departments in Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Baru (1992-1998) and Hospital Sultanah Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang in 1998. She worked in Hospital Kuala Lumpur as senior consultant till 2001.

She was appointed Professor and Head of the ophthalmology department, Melaka Manipal Medical College in 2002. Additionally, she is a visiting consultant to the Eye Department in University Hospital since 2002.

She has been instrumental in starting the oculoplastic services in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and University Hospital. Besides oculoplastics, she performs cataract, squint and other general ophthalmic surgeries and treat common ocular diseases.

She is actively involved in continuous medical education, teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and ophthalmologists interested in oculoplastics. She also made several presentations at national and international levels and is the Malaysian representative of the Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Society.

Dr. Cheah May Hong

Short Introduction

Dr. Cheah M.H. is the Consultant Anaesthetist at the International Specialist Eye Centre, Kuala Lumpur. She is responsible for setting up the operating theatres at the above centre.

Dr. Cheah M.H. obtained her undergraduate Medical Degree (MBBS) from the University of Queensland, Australia in 1994. She was a Medical Officer at the Gold Coast Hospital, Queensland, before returning to Malaysia in 1996.

During her service with the Malaysian Ministry of Health from 1996 until 1999, she served as a Medical Officer in Penang Hospital, exposing to Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Anaesthesia. During this period, she completed the Part 1 of the Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) (UK) exams, despite having decided on a career in Anaesthesia.

Dr. Cheah M.H. was a registrar in Anaesthesia at the University Malaya Medical Centre from 1999 until 2003. She simultaneously obtained her Fellowship in Anaesthesia from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and her Masters of Anaesthesiology from University Malaya. She was a Senior Registrar in Anaesthesia at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia, for 14 months during this time. Her review article on `Obesity: basic science and medical aspects relevant to anaesthetists' was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Anaesthesia, in 2005.

She was an Anaesthetist at Hospital Selayang from 2003 until 2007. Her interest in Internal Medicine serves as an additional advantage and benefit in optimising patient care, emphasising the role of Anaesthetists as peri-operative Physicians.

Dr. Lim Kian Seng

Short Introduction

Dr Lim graduated with Medical Doctor (MD) with distinctions from the National University of Malaysia in 1994 with numerous academic awards. He completed ophthalmology specialist training and was conferred Masters in Medicine (Ophthalmology) (Singapore), and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Ophthalmology) (FRCSE), Edinburgh, in 1999. Subsequently, he completed an extremely competitive Fellowship in Vitreoretinal surgery in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, United Kingdom, in 2001/2002. He is registered with the National Specialist Registry, Malaysia for ophthalmology.

Upon his return from the United Kingdom, Dr Lim was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Vitreoretinal Surgery in Selayang Hospital, the national referral eye centre in Malaysia. He was directly responsible for about 700 vitreoretinal operations performed yearly in the hospital, most of these were complicated vitreoretinal cases in particular severe diabetic retinopathy and penetrating eye injuries. In addition, he was involved in the training of postgraduate ophthalmology doctors and vitreoretinal fellows. Dr Lim served in Selayang Hospital for 4 years before he moved on to the private practice in 2007. He, however, remains a Visiting Consultant there to teach the aspiring Vitreoretinal surgeons in the country.

Dr Lim is also currently a Visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon to Sunway Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, and the National University of Malaysia (UKM). As a keen medical researcher, he has published numerous scientific articles in international medical journals and has presented at international ophthalmic meetings. He is a panellist in several consultative bodies in the Ministry of Health advising the government on health policies relating to ophthalmology. He is also a Committee Member of the Malaysian Ophthalmological Society.

Dr Lim has special interest in diabetic retinopathy, penetrating eye injuries and long standing retinal detachment. He is the first vitreoretinal Surgeon in the world to describe the successful removal of a posterior suprachoroidal metallic foreign body with the help of hypotensive anaesthesia. He has also described an innovative technique to treat long standing retinal detachment.

For his contributions to the country, Dr Lim was conferred Darjah Setia Mahkota Perlis (SMP) in 2006.

Dr Lim is a nature-lover and enjoys travelling with his family.

Dr. Kok Howe Sen

Short Introduction

Dr. Kok trained through the United Kingdom higher surgical training program at the Wessex deanery in England. He did uveitis and ocular immunology sub-specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and was consultant ophthalmic surgeon in the United Kingdom National Health Service prior to his return to Malaysia.

Dr. Kok currently advises on complex management cases at the National University of Malaysia /University Kebangsaan Malaysia, where he also functions as surgical tutor to specialist and doctors on the Malaysian Masters of Surgery specialist training program.

He has served as examiner for the Master of Surgery and has also been on several consultative bodies in the Ministry of Health, advising the government on health policies relating to ophthalmology. He has also coordinated the program for continual ophthalmology education and updating of specialist skills here in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Kok continues to be at the forefront of medical research and has collaborated in research with the National Institute of Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom and University of New South Wales in Australia. He has presented and published over 60 papers in international and national meetings and journals and continues to lead research at the National University of Malaysia /University Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Dr. Kok has particular sub-specialist interest in cataract and pterygium surgery, complex glaucoma, uveitis and medical diseases of the retina.

Dr. Fang Seng Kheong

Short Introduction

Dr. Fang is a senior consultant ophthalmologist with subspecialist interest in complicated cataracts, glaucoma and medical retina. He graduated with Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1986. He completed ophthalmology specialist training in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Hospital Kuala Lumpur between 1990 and 1994, and was conferred Masters of Surgery in Ophthalmology from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (MS Ophthal UKM) in 1994. He was a clinical fellow in glaucoma at the Department of Ophthalmology, Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney under Dr. Ivan Goldberg in 1995.

After returning from subspecialty training in glaucoma from Sydney, he was promoted as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and head the Glaucoma service between 1995 to 1999. He subsequently joined the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital in 1999 where he performed high volume cataract surgeries and glaucoma drainage devices implantation. He has conducted numerous phacoemulsification instruction courses and courses on Glaucoma drainage devices locally and internationally.

He is actively involved and served many positions in local, regional and international ophthalmology societies, including Honorary Secretary of the South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group (SEAGIG), chairperson of Malaysian Association of Small Incision Surgeons (MASIS), regional representative for the Asia Oceanic Glaucoma Society, scientific committee of the Asian Angle Closure Glaucoma Club, society editor for the International Glaucoma Review of the International Association of Glaucoma Societies and committee member for various other societies. Dr. Barkeh Jumaat

Short Introduction

Dr. Barkeh graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya and completed her post graduate studies in ophthalmology from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Malaysia.

Dr. Michael S. H. Law

Short Introduction

Dr. Michael Law graduated from the prestigious University of Dublin, Trinity College (founded in 1592, the oldest university in the Republic of Ireland), with Bachelor of Art and Medical Degrees (BA, MB. BCh, B.A.O) in 1993. In 1997, he qualified with the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and became a full Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (UK). In September 1999, he was gazetted as a Clinical Specialist in Ophthalmology by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

In June 2000, Dr. Law received subspeciality training Cornea and External Diseases of the Eye at the renowned University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. During this time, he was trained extensively in the management of complicated cornea and anterior segment diseases, and performed over a hundred cornea transplantation surgeries, both independently and supervised. While undergoing training in laser refractive surgery at the famous Gimbel Eye Center in Toronto, he also collaborated on a revolutionary research paper in which cornea transplantation was performed under topical anaesthesia. This was subsequently published in the prestigious peer reviewed journal Cornea, in 2004.

Returning to Malaysia in 2001, Dr. Law joined a local eye hospital where he practiced as a Cornea and Anterior Segment disease specialist. Until his departure in late 2006, he performed, on average, over 40-50 cornea transplantations per year. He also pioneered the development of various innovative cornea surgeries at the hospital.

Dr Choong Yee Fong

Short Introduction

Dr. Choong is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the International Specialist Eye Centre (ISEC), Kuala Lumpur. He has sub specialist interest in cataract, children eye diseases and squint. He was an ASEAN Scholar and a recipient of the prestigious British High Commissioner's Award to study Medicine in the United Kingdom. As a keen medical researcher, he has published more than 30 scientific articles in international medical journals and has given more than 40 lectures and presentations at international ophthalmic meetings. He is a panellist in several consultative bodies in the Ministry of Health advising the government on health policies relating to ophthalmology.

Dr Wong Jun Shyan

Short Introduction

Dr. Wong was both an ASEAN Scholar and Kuok Foundation scholar in his undergraduate years at the National University of Singapore. After receiving ophthalmic training from the National University of Singapore and Singapore National Eye Centre, he went on to pursue clinical fellowships in VitreoRetinal (VR) Disease at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, University of Melbourne in 1998; and at Beetham Eye Institute of Joslin Diabetes Centre, Boston the following year. As a fellow at the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, he received advanced training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Returning to Malaysia in 2000, Dr. Wong started the division of Vitreoretinal (VR) Diseases of the Department of Ophthalmology at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. There, he established a formal training structure in VR diseases, and transformed the unit into the largest VR centre in Malaysia at that time.

Dr. Wong had published more than 26 original articles in peerreviewed ophthalmic journals, and had presented some 70 papers, both as invited speaker and presenter, at international ophthalmic conferences. He was recently selected as the sole recipient from Asia-Pacific in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Leadership Development Programme 2006-7. He is an executive member on many ad-hoc and national ophthalmic committees, and he sits on many consultative panels in the Ministry of Health Malaysia advising policies related to ophthalmology.

Dr. Wong was admitted as a member of the Retina Society in 2005, and currently is the senior partner at, and the founder of, Retina Associates, Kuala Lumpur. He was recently reappointed as a Parttime Lecturer at the Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Optometry UKM.

Short Introduction

Dr Suhail Suresh has vast experience in Total Joint Replacement. He is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant Arthroplasty Surgeon in one of Malaysia's leading tertiary medical institution. He has been conducting Total Joint Surgery, namely Hip and Knee replacements in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (National Univ. of Malaysia) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Specialist Center. Dr Mohanraj Krishnasamy has been appointed as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Infertility and Reproductive Medicine Specialist at Johor Specialist Hospital from the 7th of December,2003.

He completed most of his initial training in Malaysia. He continued his training at Watford General Hospital before and after obtaining his Membership. He successfully obtained a Scholarship to pursue his special interest in Australia. He was appointed as a Fellow in Reproductive Medicine with the Reproductive Service Division of the Royal Women�s Hospital of Melbourne. Following that he served as a Fellow in Reproductive Medicine with the division of O&G at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle and The University of Newcastle, Australia.

During his working period in Australia, Dr Mohanraj had obtained experience in the management of both male and female infertility. These include most current forms of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). He had also gained experience in minimal invasive surgery, especially for the treatment of infertility. At both centres in Australia, Dr Mohanraj had received training in microsurgical infertility surgical techniques, like reversal of the female tubal ligation. He also is well versed with the management of Reproductive Endocrinological problems. These include Paediatrics and adolescent gynaecology together with Menopausal problems.

Upon returning to Malaysia, he worked as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with the Reproductive Medicine Division of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Division of the Maternity Hospital Kuala Lumpur (MHKL).
