Obesity Is A Major Problem

Obesity is a major international problem among the heaviest people in the world. Many people find that they initially lose weight by dieting, although they quickly regain the weight after the diet ends. Obesity is caused, essentially, when the number of calories which are consumed by a person is greater than the number used during physical activity. This excess is then stored in the body as fat. It is having extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water. Over weight individuals are at an extremely high risk for numerous deadly diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Many other medical problems are also associated with this disorder.

Before beginning a weight loss program, you should speak with a healthcare provider so that he/she can help to choose the appropriate treatment, monitor your progress, and provide advice and support along the way. In order to know what treatment (or combination of treatments) will work best, a healthcare provider should determine your degree of obesity and distribution of body fat. This can be done by measuring your body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (measurement). The BMI is calculated from a person's height and weight as follows: BMI = body weight (in kilograms) / height (in meters) squared. This can also be determined with a help of calculator.

General Weight Loss Treatment

One of the weight loss treatment includes lowering the total calories intake. The individual should lower the calories by eating plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition. Cutting back on calories is easier if you focus on limiting sugar and other refined carbohydrates and some types of fat. An increase physical activity also brings weight loss. The goal of exercise for weight loss is to burn more calories, although exercise depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of the activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise- such as walking and jogging. Cutting 250 calories from your daily diet can help you lose about half a pound a week. It is the best to lose weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise. As this type of weight loss does not have any side effects and it is long lasting.

Weight Loss Surgical Procedures

Severe obesity is a chronic condition that is very difficult to treat. For some people, weight loss surgery helps by restricting food intake or interrupting digestive processes. Obesity surgery also known as Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass involves making changes to the stomach and/or small intestine. Two types of surgical procedures used to promote weight loss are:

Restrictive surgery: During these procedures the stomach is made smaller. A section of your stomach is removed or closed which limits the amount of food it can grasp and causes you to feel full.

Malabsorptive surgery: Most of digestion and absorption takes place in the small intestine. Surgery to this area shortens the length of the small intestine and/or changes where it merge to the stomach, limiting the amount of food that is completely digested or absorbed (causing malabsorption). These surgeries are now operated along with restrictive surgery.

Through food intake restriction, malabsorption, or a combination of both, you can lose weight since less food either goes into your stomach or stays in your small intestine long enough to be digested and absorbed. In Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery recovery time is shorter. Most people stay in the hospital for 2-3 days, and resume normal activities in three to five weeks. The Laparoscopic gastric surgery (also known as adjustable gastric banding or lap-band) is a breakthrough bariatric (weight-loss) procedure, designed to be safe, effective, and long-term. The surgery helps retrain you to eat smart, encouraging loss of most of your excess weight at a healthy pace and helping you keep it off, permanently.

Successful treatments for weight loss include setting goals and making lifestyle changes such as eating fewer calories and being more physically active. The goal of obesity treatment is to achieve and maintain a healthier weight. The amount of weight you need to lose to improve your health may be much less than what you feel you need to lose
