Fontana Park Health and Fitness Community Center Receives 2009 Project of the Year Award

Fontana, CA — Barnhart, Inc. has received the Public Works Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) for the Fontana Park Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center. Barnhart provided general contracting services for the $49- million project completed in October 2008. The award is presented annually to encourage management and administration excellence of public works. The Fontana Park Center received the award in the Structures category - $25-$75 million range.

The project includes a 43,000-square-foot senior community center, an Aquatic Center with four recreational pools, a 25,000-square-foot Skate Park, over 15 acres of play and recreation areas and a multi-purpose pavilion for roller hockey, basketball and special events. Now the largest community center in Fontana, it has become the heart of Fontana Park. The main building features an indoor gymnasium, gymnastics and aerobics rooms, an assembly hall, dance studio and stage. Other amenities include a juice bar, resource center, classrooms and full-service kitchen.

Baxter Miller Landscape Architects, Inc. was the lead design firm. Barnhart, Inc. staff working on the project included Chris Moseley, vice president; Larry Caprio, project manager; Gerry Droge, superintendent; and Trish Horton, field engineer.

Barnhart, Inc.(www.barnhartinc.com), headquartered in San Diego, Calif., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Heery International, a 1500 person architecture, interior design, engineering, facility management, program management and construction management firm based in Atlanta, Georgia. Barnhart and Heery combined represented the fourth-largest educational builder in the nation, according to Engineering News Record magazine.
