Dr. Lim Kian Seng

Dr Lim graduated with Medical Doctor (MD) with distinctions from the National University of Malaysia in 1994 with numerous academic awards. He completed ophthalmology specialist training and was conferred Masters in Medicine (Ophthalmology) (Singapore), and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Ophthalmology) (FRCSE), Edinburgh, in 1999. Subsequently, he completed an extremely competitive Fellowship in Vitreoretinal surgery in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, United Kingdom, in 2001/2002. He is registered with the National Specialist Registry, Malaysia for ophthalmology.

Upon his return from the United Kingdom, Dr Lim was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Vitreoretinal Surgery in Selayang Hospital, the national referral eye centre in Malaysia. He was directly responsible for about 700 vitreoretinal operations performed yearly in the hospital, most of these were complicated vitreoretinal cases in particular severe diabetic retinopathy and penetrating eye injuries. In addition, he was involved in the training of postgraduate ophthalmology doctors and vitreoretinal fellows. Dr Lim served in Selayang Hospital for 4 years before he moved on to the private practice in 2007. He, however, remains a Visiting Consultant there to teach the aspiring Vitreoretinal surgeons in the country.

Dr Lim is also currently a Visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon to Sunway Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, and the National University of Malaysia (UKM). As a keen medical researcher, he has published numerous scientific articles in international medical journals and has presented at international ophthalmic meetings. He is a panellist in several consultative bodies in the Ministry of Health advising the government on health policies relating to ophthalmology. He is also a Committee Member of the Malaysian Ophthalmological Society.

Dr Lim has special interest in diabetic retinopathy, penetrating eye injuries and long standing retinal detachment. He is the first vitreoretinal Surgeon in the world to describe the successful removal of a posterior suprachoroidal metallic foreign body with the help of hypotensive anaesthesia. He has also described an innovative technique to treat long standing retinal detachment.

For his contributions to the country, Dr Lim was conferred Darjah Setia Mahkota Perlis (SMP) in 2006.

Dr Lim is a nature-lover and enjoys travelling with his family.
