The Italians have Little Italy, the Chinese have Chinatown and Latin Americans have Spanish Harlem but what about the French? Aside from a croissant here and a bistro there France is definitely not represented the way some other cultures are in New York. And since I’m sure many of us aren’t planning a trip to the City of Lights anytime soon, I’m looking forward to Bastille Day.
The daylong event takes place on the Upper East Side and is smaller than most other street fairs. It features samples of the cuisine of France and other French-speaking countries, French-themed market stalls and music and dancing by French-speaking artists. Throughout the afternoon, live Can-Can dancers will be appearing on the festival-stage (between Madison and Park Avenues).
You can participate in sports-based activities with a French twist, along with Arts & Crafts. A raffle, with drawings for various prizes will also be held throughout the day. You’ve got the chance to win a facial and massage, courtesy of Caudalie Spa, Dinner for two at Rouge Tomate or 3 FIAF French Language Sessions, with the Grand Prize of a pair of US-Paris round-trip tickets courtesy of American Airlines.
While my knowledge of the French language extends to the word moi (courtesy of Miss Piggy circa the Muppets), I wouldn’t mind a few round trip tickets to Paris. Could you image all the wine and cheese? Oh and the croissants…
