Anyone whoever said fashion wasn’t important certainly hasn’t been to FIT recently. For their latest installment, the Museum at FIT’s creative team has curated a masterful collection of over 100 pieces, simply titled “Fashion & Politics.” The exhibit takes visitors on a tour of fashion throughout the last 200 years, with iconic pieces that coincide with huge governmental, cultural and economic changes – from Victorian garb to Sarah Palin’s pumps.
While the most famous piece may be the iconic Catherine Malandrino flag dress, which stands triumphantly before you as you enter, a standout for me was a sequined mini dress with President Obama’s face grazing the front.
The exhibit also pays attention to details, with vintage Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue covers hanging on the wall alongside a Rosie the Riveter jumpsuit and hippie garb. The entire exhibit is not only beautiful, but really makes you want to head to your nearest vintage store in the hopes that you may find anything nearly as chic.
The exhibit runs through November 7th and offers free monthly guided tours available with a reservation and a lecture entitled “Where Fashion & Politics Meet: Staying On Message” given on September 10th.
